Progress above the Alex tunnel

The reduction of the load on the Alex tunnel is progressing satisfactorily despite numerous challenges. The ballast has already been reduced on an area of more than 2,000 square meters. The removed flooring was filled in with foam glass gravel and the surface was largely restored with paving. This means that a first section is almost complete: The site fences are expected to be dismantled a good distance towards the Red City Hall in mid-August.

What challenges are we talking about? In addition to the special circumstances caused by the Corona crisis, we have to deal with what is hidden in the Berlin soil day after day: For example, around 30 percent more pipes and cables than are listed in the plans. For each individual pipeline, we have to check who actually owns it. Then it's up to the respective pipeline carriers: they come and check whether the pipeline carries gas or electricity flows through it. Only then can things continue. Even old ammunition was found during the excavation, and its removal was of course completely safely supervised by a munitions expert.
